The first race took place at the end of 1971, and it was a very tough race.
It was won by Juan Izquierdo and Daniel Muniz in a Ford Mustang, who won the TO class. They finished ahead of Peter Gregg and Hurley Haywood who won the GTU class in a Porsche 911. Third was the Ford Mustang driven by Danny Moore and Gary Bishop. Phil Dermer and Russ Norburn won the TU class. Garrett Waddell won the GTO class in his Chevrolet Corvette, ending up in eleventh place.
Charlie Kemp and Wilbur Pickett won the Daytona 3Hour race in the Rinzler Motor Racing Chevrolet Corvette. Michael Keyser and Bob Beasley were second and won the GTU class, with Danny Moore and Jerry Crew again in third place and winning the TO class in their Ford Mustang. Byron Morris won the TU class in a BMW 2002.
Danville was a very interesting race, with Peter Gregg and Hurley Haywood winning over Michael Keyser and Bob Beasley in a tough battle. Daniel Muniz and Fred van Beuren were third in a Porsche 914/6. Phil Currin was the GTO class winner in a Chevrolet Corvette. Carson Baird and Joe Amato won the TU class in a Ford Pinto, ahead of Phil Dermer and Russ Norburn. Lou Statzer and Tom Dutton were the TO winners in a Chevrolet Camaro, capturing eleventh place overall.
Jim Locke and Bob Bailey took the Lime Rock round in a Porsche 911, with Klaus Bytzek finishing second. Phil Currin was third in his Chevrolet Corvette and he took the GTO class win. Jocko Maggiacomo won the TO class in a Chevrolet Camaro while John Diamanti and Walt Siemendinger won the TU class in an Alfa Romeo GTV, beating Carson Baird in his Ford Pinto.
Denny Long won the Donnybrooke round, two laps ahead of Bob Beasley and Levon Pentecost, in the Toad Hall Porsche 911. Phil Currin took another third place. Robert Hennig and Russ Norburn won the TO class in an AMC Javelin, and Carson Baird-Joe Amato wrapped up the TU win.
The Mid Ohio six hour race was very successful. Michael Keyser and Bob Beasley won the race over Hurley Haywood and Sam Posey. Third was the fantastic Ford Escort driven by Bert Everett and John Buffum, who was unchallenged in the TU class. John Greenwood and Marshall Robbins, followed by Denny Long and Jim Greendyke, made a 1-2 in the GTO class. Vince Gimondo, along with Billy Dingman packed up the TO class in a Chevrolet Camaro.
Wilbur Pickett won the Talladega round in the Rinzler Chevrolet Corvette, followed by the two cars driven by Tony de Lorenzo and Dan Daughtry for an unprecedented Corvette 1-2-3. Tom Nehl was fifth and won the TO class ahead of Hurley Haywood who won the GTU class. Dennis Shaw and Steve Coleman won the TU class in an Opel Manta.
Peter Gregg and Hurley Haywood won the 500km race held at Watkins Glen, with Maurice Carter and Paul Nichter ending up second and winnibg the TO class. Charles West won the GTO class in his own Chevrolet Corvette, and winning the GTO class.Phil Dermer won the TU class in a BMW 2002, with Andy Peterey and Hans Ziereis taking second.
The Bryar Park race was dominated by Maurice Carter and Paul Nichter, who finished six laps ahead of George Stone’s Porsche 911. Bud Deschler and Rod Harris ended up third and won the GTO class in a Chevrolet Corvette, with Fred Kepler and John Orr trailing them. Hans Ziereis and Andy Peterey earned their first TU win, followed by John Diamanti and Walt Siemendinger’s Alfa Romeo GTV.
The Daytona Finale was dominated by the big bore machines. Gene Felton won the race in his Chevrolet Camaro 7,0L, beating up Tony de Lorenzo, who drove the Leldon Blackwell Chevrolet Corvette. Maurice Carter was third and won the TO class in his Chevrolet Camaro. Michael Keyser and Bob Beasley finished fifth in their Porsche 911, and took the GTU win. Michael Keyser was the 1972 IMSA Champion. Russ Norburn won the TU class in his BMW 2002. Andy Peterey and Hans Ziereis finished second in class.
