1990 GTP facts

The 1990 Camel GT Championship season was the 20th season of the IMSA GT Championship auto racing series. It consisted of GTP and Lights classes of prototypes, as well as Grand Tourer-style racing cars which ran in the GTO and GTU classes, as well as a tube-frame All-American Challenge (AAC) class during select GT-only rounds. It began February 3, 1990 and ended November 11, 1990 after twenty rounds.

Jim Miller Racing used a Spice SE89P Chevrolet which was widely modified by Bob Riley. The front and rear track were modified while they used a 396ci engine.

Bruce Canepa was to enter a single turbo Porsche 962C at Sears Point, which suspension had been modified by crew chief Jim McCrocklin.

The new Jaguar XJR10 was fitted with a new computerized IVIS system built by Motion Technologies. The system downloads every information onto a memory card

1990 Lights facts

Parker Johnstone and Doug Peterson tried their new Spice at Sears Point. It did not use an Acura engine yet. Their first race was scheduled for the Daytona Finale.

A Phoenix Alfa Romeo was to be entered at Miami, but it produced no practice time and did not qualify.

Tomas Lopez won the title in his works Spice SE90P Buick.

Martino Finotto and Ruggero Melgrati were the strongest opponents, driving a Spice SE90P Ferrari.

1990 GTO facts

The Mercury Cougars would dominate the season. Dorsey Schroeder took the title and Robby Gordon was second.

Pete Halsmer did well in his Mazda RX7 4rotor, taking third overall.

Steve Millen took three wins in the CCR Nissan 300ZX Tc.

The Ferrari F40LMs took some top three results.

1990 GTU facts

A new Mazda MX6 with a V6 engine was to debut at Miami. The project was headed by Amos Johnson. The car was to be dropped due to a lack of interest by Mazda.

The Tampa GTO/GTU round was to be canceled.

Lance Stewart won the title in his works Mazda MX6.

David Loring won three races in his Nissan 240SX.

Don Knowles took three races in his Dodge Daytona.

1990 AAC facts

The class was one of the most competitive, with different winners throughout the season.

Vic Manuelli took one round in his Mercury Capri.

Kenny Irwin won the Topeka GT round in his Buick Somerset.

Clay Young won the Mid Ohio GT, Road America and Meadowlands rounds in his Chevrolet Beretta.

Mark Porcaro took the Mosport, Del Mar and Watkins Glen rounds in his Chevrolet Beretta.

Kendall Cranston took the San Antonio GT round in his Chevrolet Camaro.

Dan Osterholt took the Lime Rock event in his Chevrolet Beretta.
