- A fine 28 car field would show up at the twisty road course. It would another Chevrolet versus Toyota battle, which was kind of dramatically with a 2 point lead for Chevrolet prior to the race. Ford was hoping a victory with Scott Pruett still at home with his Mustang. Jack Baldwin would stick his Chevrolet Camaro on the pole, just ahead of Scott Pruett. The two Toyota Celicas, driven by Chris Cord and Willy T Ribbs were on the second row. Wally Dallenbach was next, followed by Bob Earl's Pontiac Fiero. The race would have to be very tough. The start of thé race saw Scott Pruett thundering into thé lead ahead of Jack Baldwin. While every car would rub paint as they went through thé right hander, which was very tight. Willy T Ribbs would have his valve stem from his right-front tire broken. It meant that he had to stop for a new tire. He was back in 25th position. Scott Pruett was in thé lead, and was running strong. By the second lap, his lead was 2.11s, it would jump to 8.47s after 7 laps. Chris Cord, in third place, was to get past Jack Baldwin whose car was starting to fade on lap 14. The Chevrolet Camaro would retire with a blown engine on lap 23. Chris Cord was gaining on Scott Pruett and would close in on the Ford Mustang. When traffic came into play, the situation seemed to reverse. Then things would change suddenly on lap 36 when Scott Pruett apparently went into the wall, following a blown right-front tire. The car was badly damaged and he had to retire. Chris Cord was thé new leader of the race, followed by Bob Earl. In his Pontiac Fiero. But the race was over and Chris Cord had just to let it go to the chequered. Someone behind was putting à show : Willy T Ribbs was just 2s faster than everyone! He would climb up the standings and get past Dennis Aase on lap 15, then Roger Mandeville on lap 17, Darin Brassfield on lap 22, Bruce Jenner on lap 24, Greg Pickett and Tom Gloy on lap 35 and then Wally Dallenbach. He ended up third overall, but would have certainly won, had he not been forced to pit on lap one. He made à terrific show, and proved he could have won easily.
