1985 GTP facts

New rules : cockpit mounted turbo boost banned, only in pit stops.

The BMW GTP used a brand new March built 85T gearbox instead of a Hewland in the previous races.

Trip Leon, son of Al Leon, debuted in IMSA at the Daytona Finale.

A conflict between Danny Sullivan and Emerson Fittipaldi would prevent both of them from running the Elkhart Lake race with Sarel van der Merwe in the Chevrolet Corvette GTP.

The March 85G Buick entered by Conte Racing was much revised.

Gianpiero Moretti debuted a Ferrari 308GTB powered Momo.

Jim Cook died during a qualifying session driving John Kalagian's March.

Don and Bill Whittington sold Road Atlanta to Art and Al Leon.

Electramotive entered the new Nissan GTP, which appeared for the first time with a Lola T810 chassis.

Lee Racing entered a Lola T710, which was the first Chevrolet Corvette GTP.

Gary Wonzer was to drive the Chevron B36 Buick formerly owned by Del Taylor, who was to co-drive him. The car was a dns.

1985 Lights facts

Herm Johnson was scheduled to co-drive Peter Argetsinger in the Polimotor Lola T616.

Royale delivered the first RP40 car to Diman Racing, for drivers Diego Febles, Chris Marte and Mandy Gonzalez.

Jim Downing switched to an Argo JM19, after beginning the season with a JM16 chassis. The car was powered by a Mazda powerplant.

1985 GTO facts

Charly Selix, chassis builder and Gary Pratt, chief fabricator, left Jack Roush and went on to work for Chevrolet. Bob Riley was expected to do the same.

Bob Sharp was expected to put together a GTO effort for his drivers, Paul Newman and Jim Fitzgerald.

Don Walker, who was behind the Dallas Grand Prix, entered a BMW M1.

AAR would jump into the GTO class with a turbocharged version of the Toyota Celica. Dennis Aase was the lead driver.

Brooks Racing fielded a Ford Thunderbird, driven by Darin Brassfield and Scott Pruett. They would be Roush Protofab's main competition.

KJJ Enterprises entered once the Triumph TR8 ex-Peter Bulkowski. It was the first retirement at Sebring. John Bossom, Ken Hill and Regan Riley drove it.

1985 GTU facts

Jack Baldwin would clinch the GTU championship and make it two in a row with the CCR Mazda RX7.

Tom Kendall debuted his IMSA career driving the team's Mazda RX7.

Will Swope entered the ex-Altec Lansing GTU Porsche 914/6.

Huffaker Racing fielded a pair of new Pontiac Fieros, driven by Bob Earl and Terry Visger.

Mosler Racing also entered a Ferrari 308GTB for George Alderman, Joe Hill and Steve Alexander at Daytona.

Elliot Forbes Robinson drove the Performance Motorsport Porsche 924GTR to strong results.

Scott Pruett drove the Mike Meyer Racing Mazda RX7, but he would switch to the Brooks Racing Thunderbird.
