- 55 cars were to take the green for this event, with Al Holbert leading the Championship. The debut of the Chevrolet Corvette GTP would also attract great interest. A Nissan ZX GTP, driven by Don Devendorf and Tony Adamowicz, would also be à challenger to the Porsche 962s, as would be thé Ford Probe, powered by a 4 cylinder turbo engine. The six Porsche 962s would remain as the favourites for the race, however. Two Jaguar XJR5s were also entered, with Bob Tullius-Chip Robinson and Brian Redman-Hurley Haywood at the wheel of the sleek cats. Conte Racing had brought two Buick powered Marches with John Paul Jr-Bill Adam and Whitney Ganz-Bob Lobenberg. The qualifying session saw Klaus Ludwig take the pole with the Ford Probe, followed by Bobby Rahal, who drove the Dyson Racing Porsche 962. Whitney Ganz was third, while à string of Porsche was behind. Bob Wollek, Al Holbert, Pete Halsmer and Jochen Mass followed. When the green was set, Klaus Ludwig jumped into thé lead, but he was soon overtaken by Bob Wollek. He was soon to be followed by Drake Olson, Jochen Mass was in fourth place with John Paul next and Al Holbert. The Electramotive Nissan was soon to be blackflagged as the car sprayed oil onto following cars. An oil leak was to be discovered and repaired. Darin Brassfield, who led the GTO field, retired when his engine let go on lap six. Whitney Ganz would coast to a stop on lap twelve, while Pete Halsmer lost à wheel on the track. He drove to the pits on three wheels and went back to the track. An incident took place between Don Devendorf and Brian Redman, with the Jaguar seemingly hitting the Nissan just after the bridge. Thé Nissan veered onto the grass and into the pit wall guardrail. A crew member for Roush Racing was struck by fiberglass and examined at the track hospital. Another incident occured between John Oates in à Pontiac Fiero , Paul Lewis in a Mazda RX7 and Jerry Molnar in a Buick Regal Tc. The Pontiac Fiero spun and hit the rail while Paul Lewis damaged his car while trying to avoid the Pontiac. After thé first round of pit stops, Bob Tullius was in the lead, but only for two laps. He would retire with a broken inner stub axle. Klaus Ludwig-Doc Bundy retired the Ford Probe with overheating. At That point, the race was already all Porsche. Five 962s were leading with the Chevrolet Corvette GTP in sixth place. Sarel van der Merwe and David Hobbs would lose a cylinder on lap forty nine. The car expired on lap 70. Al Holbert-Derek Bell Led the race ahead of Drake Olson-Bobby Rahal. Brian Redman-Hurley Haywood were climbing up the standings, and would appear in third place at mid point. Then, on lap 73, Jim Mullen crashed the Porsche 962 he drove, soaring into the trees. The car was destroyed but he was unhurt. On lap 77, Bobby Rahal took the lead from Derek Bell's car. Hurley Haywood then overtook him on lap 96. In fact, the Lowenbrau car would stop for good with terminal engine problems. The race was then to be run under water.
Bobby Rahal was in the lead, followed by Hurley Haywood, but the Jaguar would also retire in a puff of smoke. Bob Wollek and Bruce Leven were now in second place, but forty three seconds down. The Camel Lights class was to be won by Kelly Marsh-Don Marsh-Ron Pawley in an Argo JM19 Mazda, beating Jim Downing-John Maffucci's similar car. The GTO class was dominated throughout the race by John Jones-Lyn St. James Ford Mustang. Chet Vincentz-Kees Nierop finished second in a Porsche 934 while Scott Pruett and Bruce Jenner ended up third after losing seven laps changing à water pump. The GTU class was led by the AAR Toyota Celica for 80 laps. Jack Baldwin-Jeff Kline were behind, waiting their time.
Later in the race, the car was to have an off course in the rain. The Mazda took the lead and won the GTU class.
