- This would be another Ford versus Toyota versus Pontiac battle, with Ford dominating the field, however. From the onset, Roush racing was setting its mark on the GTO class with a pair of mighty Ford Mustangs. They had not been beaten in the 1985 schedule. However, things would have to change, according to Toyota. Dennis Aase would win the pole in the turbocharged car, and he was just ahead of Darin Brassfield, who drove the Brooks Racing Ford Thunderbird.
Darin Brassfield had a race of his own.
John Jones and Wally Dallenbach Jr were in third place, followed by Chris Cord, who was a stunning fourth overall in his GTU Toyota Celica! Thirty one cars were entered and would fight it up on the twisty little track. The race would have to be exciting, with the Dingman Bros Pontiac Firebirds waiting for their time. Gene Felton and Tommy Riggins were at the wheel. In GTU, Mazda was outnumbering the field, but they had to really count upon the Toyota Celicas and the new Pontiac Fieros. Jack Baldwin was leading the GTU class and determined to stay on top. The start of the race saw Dennis Aase take the lead, followed by Darin Brassfield who remained on his heels for a while. The two drivers were running close to their qualifying times, until the first caution period. At the restart, Darin Brassfield took the lead while Dennis Aase was experiencing brake problems. While Darin Brassfield kept the lead, he was keeping a more relaxed pace, until the first pit stop for refueling. He was the first to stop, with an empty pit lane in front of him. He would restart one lap down the leaders, who had to pit very soon. Then John Jones would stop and lend his car to Wally Dallenbach Jr, but the drivers change led to an ignition switched off. The car had trouble to restart, and a lot of time was lost in the process. Wally Dallenbach Jr wasn't running for the lead anymore, with four laps lost. Dennis Aase would challenge Darin Brassfield until lap eighty two, but the turbo broke an exhaust header, and his race was over. The leader then had to cruise to a somewhat easy victory, finishing two laps ahead of Chris Cord, who won the GTU class! The latter had a perfect race, with a car that was simply perfect on this track. He lapped the entire GTU field and was ahead of Roger Mandeville in his GTO Mazda RX7. Tommy Riggins would not last more than one lap while Gene Felton's race was over after nineteen laps. Bob Earl lost some time in the pits, coping with an oil leak. Mazda took the next three GTU spots, with Jack Balwin finishing in second place, followed by Amos Johnson and Al Bacon. The perfect race for both winners.Follow me on Twitter to get the updates
