This new season was to provide a new regain in interest.
The 24 Hour of Daytona race began with an overall victory for the JLP Porsche 935 JLP2 driven by John Paul Sr and Jr, co-driven by German star Rolf Stommelen. It was a Porsche triumph, once again, with Bob Akin, Craig Siebert and Derek Bell finishing second in a Porsche 935K3 and Mauricio de Narvaez, Bob Garretson and Jeff Wood coming in third place. The works Mazda RX7 driven by Yoshimi Katayama, Yojiro Terada and Takashi Yorino made mincemeat of the opppsition and won the GTO class, with Ernesto Soto, Rene Rodriguez and Tico Almeida ending up second in class in a Porsche Carrera RSR. Lee Mueller, Kathy Rude and Allan Moffat topk the GTU win over teammates Walt Bohren, Jim Mullen and Ron Grable for a nice GTU Mazda RX7 win.
The Pauls, father and son went on winning the Sebring 12Hour race, but the new March 82G Chevrolet driven by Bobby Rahal, Jim Trueman and Mauricio de Narvaez finished on the same lap as the winners. Diego Febles, Tato Ferrer and Chiqui Soldevilla had a fine run and easily won the GTO class over Rainer Brezinka, Fritz Hochreuter and Rudy Bartling for a new Porsche Carrera RSR victory. John Morton and Tom Klausler were third in a Ford Mustang. Roger Mandeville, Jeff Kline and Amos Johnson grabbed a fine GTU victory in the Mandeville Auto Tech Mazda RX7. Jim Downing, John Maffucci and Tom Waugh were second in the RGP500 Mazda RX7.
John Paul Jr went on to win Road Atlanta at the wheel of the new Porsche 935JLP3. He was ahead of Danny Ongais and Kevin Cogan, in the Ford Mustang Tc. Dennis Aase, in Chuck Kendall's BMW M1, took the GTO class, with Phil Currin's Chevrolet Corvette in second place and Bob Raub, in the new Pontiac Firebird, in third place. The GTU race was dominated by the Datsun 280ZXs driven by Logan Blackburn and George Alderman, who finished 1-2. Jim Downing and Roger Mandeville were next.
The Riverside 6Hour race went to the Lola T600 Chevrolet driven by Ted Field and Bill Whittington, two laps ahead of Al Holbert and Harald Grohs, in the new Andial Porsche 935L. M.L Speer and Terry Wolters were in third place in a Porsche 935JLP2. Tico Almeida and Ernesto Soto won the GTO class, Chuck Kendall and Dennis Aase lost time on the pits and finished second. Jim Cook and Jim Mullen won the GTU class in the Casey Montex Mazda RX7, followed by Jack Dunham-Jeff Kline.
John Paul Jr won the Laguna Seca race, this time driving a Lola T600 Chevrolet. Danny Ongais, also in a Lola T600 Chevrolet, was second and John Fitzpatrick, at the wheel of a new Porsche 935K4, was third. Don Devendorf won the GTO class in a Datsun 280ZX Tc, beating Rene Rodriguez, who drove a Chevrolet Corvette and Bruno Beilcke, in a BMW M1. Joe Varde won the GTU race, edging Jim Downing and Jack Dunham. The three of them drove a Mazda RX7.
John Paul Sr and his son went on winning the Charlotte round, driving the Porsche 935JLP3. Kenper Miller and Dave Cowart had their best result of the season atbthe wheel of the underpowered March 82G BMW. Bob Akin and Craig Siebert finished third in the Coke Porsche 935K3. Billy Hagan and Gene Felton won the GTO class, with Joe Crevier and Len Renwick in second place. Logan Blackburn, co-driven by George Alderman, won the GTU class. Jim Downing and John Maffucci took the second place.
John Fitzpatrick won the Mid Ohio 100 Miler, his Porsche 935K4 beating the two Interscope Lola T600 Chevrolet driven by Danny Ongais and Ted Field. Don Devendorf took another GTO win, again ahead of Rene Rodriguez, while Joe Crevier was third in his BMW M1. Jim Downing won the GTU race, while Bob Leitzinger was second in his Datsun 280ZX and Jack Dunham was third in his Mazda RX7.
John Fitzpatrick was on a winning trail, as he captured the Lime Rock race, defeating the three Lola T600 Chevrolet entered. John Paul Jr was second, followed by Ted Field and Danny Ongais. Don Devendorf again won the GTO class, followed by Gene Felton, who drove his own Chevrolet Camaro, and Rene Rodriguez.
Joe Varde won the Summit Point race in the John Casey Mazda RX7, followed by Roger Mandeville and Logan Blackburn, in a Datsun 280ZX.
Ted Field and Danny Ongais took an easy victory at Daytona, beating M.L Speer and Terry Wolters in the Porsche 935JLP3, while Diego Montoya ended up third in his BMW M1, winning the GTO class. Logan Blackburn took a sweet victory in GTU, ahead of Jim Downing and Roger Mandeville.
John Paul Jr took the Brainerd round, this time driving a brand new JLP4 Porsche 935. Danny Ongais and Ted Field were right behind him, both of them driving a Lola T600 Chevrolet. Tico Almeida won the GTO class in his Ford Mustang over Tom Nehl in a Chevrolet Camaro. They were bettered by Logan Blackburn, in his Datsun 280ZX, who won the GTU class over Joe Varde and Roger Mandeville in their Mazda RX7.
At Sears Point, a new car would take the win as Klaus Ludwig powered his Ford Mustang Tc to first place ahead of Danny Ongais and Skeeter McKitterick in a Rondeau M382 Chevrolet. Don Devendorf took another GTO win, one lap ahead of Chuck Kendall's BMW M1. It was a 1-2-3 for Mazda, with Joe Varde winning over Roger Mandevilke and Jim Downing.
John Paul Jr won the Portland race in his Porsche 935JLP4. Ted Field was second while Don Devendorf was third in his Datsun 280ZX Tc, easily winning the GTO class. Pat Usher was second in his Chevrolet Corvette. Roger Mandeville won the GTU race, beating Joe Varde and Lee Mueller, who drove a new Toyota Celica, entered by Kent Racing.
John Paul Sr and Jr teamed up for a new victory at Mosport, this time at the wheel of the JLP3 Porsche 935. Chris Cord and Jim Adams finished second in a Lola T600 Chevrolet, and Marty Hinze and Randy Lanier took a nice third place in a March 82G Chevrolet. Chet Vincentz and Wayne Baker grabbed the GTO victory in the Electrodyne Porsche 934 over Don Devendorf and Tony Adamowicz. Roger Mandevilke and Amos Johnson won the GTU class, but Rick Knoop and Ron Grable took a well deserved second place in a Toyota Celica.
John Fitzpatrick and fellow Englishman David Hobbs won the Road America race in the Porsche 935K4, ahead of John Paul Jr and Mauricio de Narvaez in the JLP3 Porsche 935. Third was the new Jaguar XJR5 driven by Bob Tullius and Bill Adam. Bob Raub and Chris Gleason won the GTO class in the Oftedahl Pontiac Firebird. Chet Vincentz and Mark Hutchins were second in a Porsche 934. Joe Varde and Jeff Kline won the GTU class, with Logan Blackburn and George Alderman second in a Datsun 280ZX.
The Mid Ohio 6Hour race went to John Fitzpatrick and David Hobbs, at the wheel of the ever improving Porsche 935K4. Chris Cord and Jim Adams had another second place, in a Lola T600 Chevrolet, and Marty Hinze-Randy Lanier were third in the March 82G Chevrolet. Don Devendorf and Tony Adamowicz took a new GTO class win in their Datsun 280ZX Tc, Chet Vincentz and Wayne Baker finishing second. George Alderman and Logan Blackburn won the GTU class, Joe Varde and Jeff Kline were second in a Mazda while Rick Knoop and Ron Grable were third in a Toyota Celica.

Dave Cowart and Kenper Miller were third in a March 82G BMW. John Greenwood and Rene Rodriguez won the GTO class, driving a neat Chevrolet Corvette. Ken Murray and Chris Doyle were second in a Chevrolet Camaro. Roger Mandeville and Amos Johnson won the GTU class with Rick Knoop and Ron Grable second with the Toyota Celica.
Ted Field and Danny Ongais won the Pocono race in their Lola T600 Chevrolet, and John Paul Jr and Sr finished second, in JLP3. Chet Vincentz and Wayne Baker took a fine third place overall and won the GTO class. Diego Montoya, Tony Garcia and Garth Ullom were second in a BMW M1. Jim Downing and John Maffucci won the GTU class, followed by Jack Dunham and Jim Mullen, for another Mazda win.
The Daytona Finale was won by the Lola T600 Chevrolet driven by Danny Ongais and Ted Field. John Fitzpatrick and Bob Wollek were next, in the Porsche 935K4, which was less suited to this track. Derek Bell and Randy Lanier were third in a Preston Henn entered Porsche 935K3. Billy Hagan and Gene Felton took the GTO win in the Stratagraph Chevrolet Camaro. Don Devendorf and Tony Adamowicz ended up second after starting dead last. Jim Downing and John Maffucci won the GTU class, ahead of Doug Carmean and Ed Pimm, with Jack Dunham and Jim Mullen finished third.
John Paul Jr was the new GTP Champion, Don Devendorf won the GTO title and Jim Downing was crowned as the GTU Champion.
