Overnight success
- Les Griebling did it tell. A bunch of 56 cars would show up at the attractive Mid Ohio track. What a beautiful race it would be! The usual Porsche versus Chevrolet battle, with some extra opposition for both makes as well. John Buffum had brought his ver fast Ford Escort BDA, which was able to run as as the big bangers. John Grenwood had brought a pair of Chevrolet Corvettes. Another great contenter was Ike Knupp, whose Chevrolet Corvette was in the lead at the start of the race. Michael Keyser was back with the car he drive to Le Mans, while Hurley Haywood was co-driven by Sam Posey. They would qualify fourth overall. When the lead car experienced trouble, it was Michael Keyser in the lead fighting with Hurley Haywood. The battle would last for a long while, then suddenly, the rain would come. The leaders manager to stay ahead of the pack, but Sam Posey's car would throw flames during a pit stop. The car was not to be damaged, but time was lost. Sam Posey and Hurley Haywood finally ended up in second place, one lap down. In third place came the mighty Ford Escort driven by John Buffum and Bert Everett, who had a fantastic race. John Greenwood and Dick Smothers finished fourth overall, but earned the GTO class honours. Big bangers were not at an advantage on this track this very sunday. IMSA was the winner with 23000 spectators for the weekend.
