Earl Roe and Tim Selby Porsche 914/6

The car ended up its story at the end of the 1987 IMSA season as it was no longer eligible. Does anyone know anything about a car that nearly experience any dnf? While it may sound as extraordinary, this car did exist. Was it a megabucks car? No, it just happens to be a 1971 Porsche 914/6, which was driven by Tim Selby and Earl Roe. This car had started its long career in the hands of Wolfgang Maike, who sold it to racing whiz Bill Cuddy. It was raced in some West Coast events in 1971-1972. Then Wolfgang Maike sold it to Fred Baker who raced it in 1975-1976. Earl Roe purchased the car in 1977 and started to enter it in SCCA C production. He would run it for four years in a row and finished 8th at the Runoffs in 1980. Then Earl Roe, who was a Porsche stalwart, converted the car to GTU specs. He would be partnered by Porsche specialist Tim Selby and race the car from 1982 thru 1987. A remarkable fact was that it would never retire in any race it would enter, leading the car to an unbeatable 84,6 % reliability score. The engine was a 2,7L 4 cylinder powerplant yielding a 248 hp on the dyno. Not so much but pretty good to achieve the job. The chassis was a semi tubeframe built by Richie Ginther at first, then modified by Earl Roe and Tim Selby. Serial number for the car was 914 0430 538. Sadly, it would finish in a barn just after its very last race, which was to happen at the end of 1987, when the car appeared to be non eligible for the next season. Earl Roe happened to be a PCA member, and his accounting firm took care of the former organisation books. He also had a dream, which was to race, and his dream finally came true. After the end of the 1987 season, the car would be no longer raced and the team's decision to quit racing was a very hard one. It was the end of a six seasons of hard work, great races and moments of real happiness. The car was meticulously prepped, and both Tim Selby and Earl Roe could really be proud of that.

The car, which was somewhat underpowered compared to the Mazda RX7s and Datsun 280Zxs, did well in some enduro events. A string of third places has been recorded, which was purely amazing for such a car. In 1995, the car would be brought to life when Alan Kendall, another Porsche enthusiast, purchased the car. He would carefully strip it, and rebuilt it to the same racing configuration. The only difference, which was a visual one, was the paint scheme. Striking with its yellow and black livery, it appeared as new. The car would bring back some memories, again!



Tim Selby and Earl Roe had one of their best results at Mid Ohio in 1982, finishing 20th overall and 3rd in GTU.
