Brumos Racing
Peter Gregg was a 4 time winner of the 24 Hours at Daytona. In each of these races he piloted a Porsche. He purchased the Jacksonville, FL Brumos Porsche dealership in the mid 1960s from its original owner and won the 1973 and '74 Trans-Am Series in his Brumos Porsches. Peter carried the Brumos Porsche racing programs through the 1970s with Hurley Haywood winning the 1975 Camel GT Series in new Carrera RSR. Sadly in 1980 Gregg committed suicide in Florida. His lasting legacy though is the winning years of Brumos Porsche in the world of professional and GT racing. Peter Gregg is forever a hero in the eyes of Porsche Motorsports enthusiasts and a legendary American driver. Brumos Racing is an automobile racing team based in Jacksonville, Florida, currently competing in the Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series. The team was established in 1971 as a part of the IMSA GT Championship season, and is sponsored by Brumos Porsche, which has been an authorized Porsche dealership since 1959. Prior to their entry in Grand Am, Brumos used Porsche GT cars supplied by the dealership. The iconic Brumos Porsche team has a long history at VIR that dates back many years prior to the debut of the Daytona Prototypes. In fact, the Haywood/Gregg era of Brumos domination in the 70's began with back-to back wins at VIR preceding their 1971 and 1972 IMSA championships. This year the race date holds special significance for the team, as April 24th marks the 3rd anniversary of the loss of Brumos leader Bob Snodgrass. The thrilling podium finish for the Brumos #58 car that year, just days after his unexpected death, remains as one of the most memorable and emotional races in the team's history. The 1971 Brumos Porsche 914/6 GT won the IMSA inaugural race at Virginia International Raceway as well as Bridgehampton and Summit Point - exactly half the races of the first IMSA GT season. Gregg's attention to detail in preparing his Porsches prior to every race, coupled with his ability to leave nothing to chance, found Peter being compared to the now-legendary Roger Penske (who also knows a thing or two about racing Porsches). Gregg not only had the best equipment, but he made sure that his Brumos Porsches were better prepared than any of his competition. Peter Gregg didn't just win races, he dominated IMSA for nearly a decade. Between 1971 and 1979, Gregg won six IMSA GT Championships (1971, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1978, and 1979), and racked up 41 victories including three wins at the famed Daytona Rolex 24-hour race with his co-driver and long-time friend, Hurley Haywood. He also won the Sebring 12-Hour race, twice finished on the podium at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and won two Trans-Am titles. At the time of his death by his own hand in 1980, Peter Gregg was acknowledged to be one of America's greatest road racers of his time. Crew member, with Jack Atkinson as crew chief, on the record breaking and highly successful 1973 to 1980 Peter Gregg Brumos Porsche race team. Starting with the surprise 1973 24 Hours of Daytona overall win with Peter Greggs Carrera RSR, this famous race team achieved the impossible:
4-time winners of 24 Hours of Daytona ('73, '74, '78, '79)
2-time winners of 12 Hours of Sebring ('73, '74)
2 SCCA Trans Am Championships ('72, '77)
5 IMSA/Camel GT Championships ('73, '74, '75, '78, '79)
