Walt Bohren
-
Walt Bohren passed away on 8th february 2011. IMSA lost one of his most competitors. His career spanned for more than a decade, and he earned some fine results. His name has long been associated with Mazda, and he began his career in 1974, driving a Mazda RX2. He would have some great races, but his career really took off in 1980, when he earned the GTU Championship, driving a Mazda RX7 entered by Racing Beat. He would also have a class victory at Sebring in 1981. Three years later, he made the big move into GTO competition, driving a Chevrolet Corvette entered by Dingman Bros Racing. He would take two victories in a wild looking car. The following season, he would switch to a Pontiac Firebird, which was still entered by Dingman Bros. He would also drive for Buz McCall's Skoal Bandit team, with some mixed results. 1987 would be his last full season.
He was always fast, whatever car he drove. An outstanding driver, who had some kind of killer instinct which made him get the best of every car. A man with a strong personality, perhaps not so easy to deal with, but he was so good. Not only was he fast, but he felt the car and knew how to have his car set up, by giving the right information to the mechanics. He would later pursue another career as an Instructor at the Skip Barber Racing school, but his professional career as a race driver would kind of fade away. He would later find his way by running a catamaran and wandering the sea. He was found dead while enjoying a very cool lifestyle. He will be missed.
