Gregg all the way

34 cars would take the green but John Paul Chevrolet Corvette blew an engine on the pace lap. David Hobbs seemed to be able to defeat Peter Gregg, but it would last only four laps. It looked like the BMW 320Tc was clearly faster, and it surprised even David Hobbs, but it was. But his joy was not to last for long, as he retired from the race with a blown piston. Peter Gregg then took the lead, but would soon experience some vibrations in his Porsche 935. He had started on soft compound tires and some chunks of rubber had shredded off the tires. His advantage over Giampiero Moretti was to shrink from 18 seconds to less than 7 seconds at the chequered. The race was to be dominated by Porsche, but Carl Shafer, in his mean sounding Chevrolet Camaro, just put on a show. He had to pit after seven laps, with power steering problems. He wrestled with his car for 25 laps, and finally posted a 4th place overall, which was simply great! David Cowart took the GTO win in his Porsche Carrera RSR and Dave White did the same in GTU with his Porsche 911. Sam Posey had to retire after four laps in his Bob Sharp Datsun 260Z.
